Annatto Oil

What is it

Annatto oil is extracted from the seeds of the annatto tree (Bixa orellana). It is widely used as a natural orange-red colorant and is a major source of natural tocotrienols, particularly delta- and gamma-tocotrienol, in supplements.

Cardiovascular markers (tocotrienols)

Limited Evidence

Some clinical evidence supports modest LDL and triglyceride reductions with annatto tocotrienols.

Bone density

Limited Evidence

Preliminary clinical data suggest possible bone density benefits in postmenopausal women.

How it works

Annatto seeds contain carotenoids (bixin and norbixin, responsible for color) and tocotrienols (a family of vitamin E compounds). Tocotrienols differ from tocopherols (the more common vitamin E form) and have been studied for cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic effects. Annatto tocotrienols are tocopherol-free, distinguishing them from palm- or rice bran-derived tocotrienol products that contain both tocopherols and tocotrienols.

Dosage

Tocotrienol studies typically use 100 to 300 mg/day of mixed tocotrienols. Annatto color use in supplements is at much smaller amounts.

When and how to take it

Take with a fat-containing meal for best tocotrienol absorption.

Annatto delta/gamma tocotrienol

Sold as tocopherol-free tocotrienol supplement.

Fat-soluble; better absorbed with meals.

Safety

Generally well tolerated at typical doses. Annatto allergy is rare but reported.

Who should be cautious

Avoid in known annatto allergy. Use caution if on anticoagulants. Pregnancy and lactation safety at high tocotrienol doses are not well established.

Interactions

Tocotrienols may potentiate effects of anticoagulants at high doses. May interact with statins, with some additive lipid effects in some studies.

Frequently asked questions

Are tocotrienols better than tocopherols?

They have different properties. Mixing the two can be useful, but high-dose alpha-tocopherol can interfere with tocotrienol absorption, which is why tocopherol-free annatto tocotrienol is sometimes preferred.

Does annatto cause allergies?

Allergy is rare but reported. People with multiple food allergies should be aware of annatto as a possible trigger.
