ginger
3 interactions related to ginger
curcumin + ginger
Curcumin and ginger both inhibit NF-kB and COX-2 signaling, but ginger also independently blocks 5-lipoxygenase and contains gingerols and shogaols that suppress prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis. A randomized trial of a turmeric-black pepper-ginger combination showed efficacy comparable to naproxen for chronic knee osteoarthritis pain.
warfarin + ginger
Ginger inhibits thromboxane synthase and reduces platelet aggregation; case reports describe elevated INR after addition of oral ginger to stable warfarin therapy. A 2019 case report (Rubin et al., Case Reports in Medicine) and the Tan 2021 BJCP systematic review document the signal, though controlled trials in healthy volunteers have been mixed.
ginger tea + metformin
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has modest blood-glucose-lowering activity in randomized trials in type 2 diabetes, primarily improving fasting glucose and HbA1c. Combined with metformin, the effect is generally additive rather than dangerous, but it can occasionally contribute to hypoglycemia, particularly with other glucose-lowering drugs or fasting.
